Did you know that the skin is the largest endocrine organ in the body? “What is an endocrine organ”, you ask? An endocrine organ is a system that secretes and regulates hormone production in the body. Hormones? That’s right!
The skin is a major player in this regard. As it turns out, the skin absorbs about 60% of what we put on it!
No wonder it seems as if everyone around us is hyper-focused on products marketed as “natural, organic, and clean.” Turns out, that doesn’t make them safe at all. Sneaky, right?
Once we begin to open our eyes to the world of natural living, we become aware of the thousands of chemicals that we are exposed to on a daily basis.
The average woman puts about 515 synthetic chemicals on her body, on a daily basis!
Even companies such as Johnson & Johnson are phasing out some of the known toxic chemicals. You heard about them having to pay out $72 million to a case where their product was linked to ovarian cancer? Okay, okay, you get the point! So, here are the top chemical names to avoid:
Sodium Lauryth Sulfate: Commonly found in soaps, shampoo, and body wash to give it froth/suds. It builds up in the brain, heart, lungs, and liver.
Fragrance: An umbrella term for thousands of chemicals that are untested and unknown to be safe. Be cautious of “Organic: products with 4 ingredients listed and the last one being “fragrance”. That could potentially make that 4 ingredients move to 2,004 ingredients!
Formaldehyde: A preservative in makeup, hair spray, and nail products. It is known to aggravate allergies and is a known carcinogen.
Propylene glycol: Linked to neurotoxicity in children along with damage to liver and kidneys in all ages.
Triclosan: Commonly found in soaps and hand-sanitizers, this is a hormone disrupter that has been linked to cancer.
Phthalates: Preservative in cleaning product and skincare product. It is known to impact the endocrine system, particularly the reproductive organs.
Parabens: Preservatives found in make-up and skincare products that are known to store in breast tissue, having a link to breast cancer.
Aluminum: Mainly found in deodorant and has been linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Talc: Found in baby powders, feminine powders, blush, and on condoms. This has been linked to ovarian cancer when inhaled or placed directly on reproductive body parts.
Mineral Oil: Found in makeups, creams, baby oils. This clogs pores and prevents the body from ridding itself of toxins.
Where do you start?
Start by making a list of the top 10 products you use on a daily basis. Start going through labels and finding alternative products. You can check out the Environmental Working Group to lookup your products and see how they compare. If they aren’t listed, that doesn’t mean they aren’t worthy, it just means they haven’t looked at it yet!
